Best time to visit Watamu
Watamu is warm all year, but the sea, the winds and the wildlife each have their season. Here is how to pick your dates.
The short answer
For calm, clear water and the best snorkelling, come between October and March. For safari, the dry months of June to October and January to February make animals easier to find. The long rains fall from April to early June, when many hotels close or offer their lowest rates.
Season by season
- December to March: hottest and driest, sea like glass, peak billfish season. Book early for Christmas and New Year.
- April to June: long rains, heavy but usually in bursts. Quiet beaches, green countryside, lowest prices.
- July to October: the kusi wind blows from the south, keeping days pleasant. Some sea swell, still fine for boat trips. Excellent for Tsavo.
- November: short rains, warm, and the sea begins to settle again.
Tides matter more than you think
Watamu's reef and sandbanks change completely between high and low tide. Snorkelling is best around low tide when the coral gardens are shallow and sheltered; dhow trips on Mida Creek need high water. We plan every trip around the tide table, so tell us your dates and we will suggest the best days.
