Getting to Watamu
By air to Malindi, by train and road via Mombasa, or by road from Nairobi. Honest advice on each route and what it really costs in time.
Fly to Malindi (easiest)
Malindi Airport (MYD) is about 25 minutes by road from Watamu. Daily flights connect it with Nairobi Wilson and Jomo Kenyatta airports and take roughly an hour. We arrange airport pick-ups at any hour, which is helpful for late arrivals.
Fly to Mombasa, then road
Moi International Airport in Mombasa has far more international connections. From there it is about two and a half to three hours by road to Watamu along the Mombasa to Malindi highway, crossing at the Kilifi bridge. Private transfers are the most comfortable option after a long flight.
Train from Nairobi
The Madaraka Express SGR runs between Nairobi and Mombasa in about five to six hours and is comfortable and reliable. Book seats a few days ahead, especially on weekends and holidays, then continue by road from Mombasa Terminus.
Driving from Nairobi
Nairobi to Watamu is around 550 km and a long day's drive, eight to ten hours with stops. Many guests break the journey with a night in Tsavo East, which turns the transfer into a safari. Ask us about this combination.
