Staying safe and healthy
Watamu is a relaxed, friendly place. A little common sense keeps it that way for you.
Health
Speak to your doctor about malaria prevention, and consider yellow fever, typhoid and hepatitis A vaccinations. Drink bottled or filtered water. Watamu has a good private clinic and Malindi has hospitals; travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended.
Beach and sea
Swim within the reef and check the tide before you head out. Currents can be strong at the reef gaps, and the sun is fierce; the shade of a makuti umbrella is your friend between eleven and three.
Beach sellers
You will meet friendly 'beach boys' offering boat trips, curios and safaris. A polite, firm 'no thank you' is respected. If you would like a trip, booking through a licensed operator means insured boats, trained crew and fair pay for everyone involved.
