What to pack for Watamu

Essentials

• Light, breathable clothing and one warmer layer for boats at dawn and air-conditioned rooms.
• Reef-safe sunscreen, a wide hat and sunglasses. The equatorial sun is strong even on cloudy days.
• Insect repellent for evenings, and consider antimalarials after speaking to your doctor.
• Water shoes or old trainers for rocky reef edges and the Marafa gorge.
• A reusable water bottle. Kenya has banned single-use plastic bags, and many places offer refills.

Nice to have

• Binoculars for birds at Mida Creek and game in Tsavo.
• A waterproof phone pouch for boat trips.
• A power bank; power cuts happen occasionally.
• A sarong or kikoi, useful as a towel, cover-up and picnic blanket.

Dress respectfully

Swimwear is for the beach and pool. In Watamu village, Gede, Malindi old town and anywhere near mosques, cover shoulders and knees. Local people are relaxed and welcoming, and the courtesy is noticed.
